John asks…What causes a substance to emit a colored light when it is vaporized in the burner flame?Why do different substances give off different colors? Please be specific. This is based on a flame test for: sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, lithium nitrate, potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate, strontium nitrate, barium nitrate, and sodium chloride (solid).
